What’s your name?

Doug Triplett

Where do you serve, what is your title, and how long have you served there?

I am the main writer at GodsOwnMan.com and the owner of Elkhound Technologies. I was the webmaster for Fellowship Baptist in Barboursville, WV. I have been working with churches on staff for over 10 years and have been the Christian Education pastor and tech guru at a couple of churches.

How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t go to church?

I help churches develop online campuses and teach them why they can’t swipe a graphic from a search. LOL

What were some of the things that you experienced that shaped the way you approach your work?

That churches often lack education in using technology and keeping up with laws that affect them. Thankfully, most are willing to listen and learn.

One important thing for churches to know about adding any technology is to start small and grow. They dont have to have every gizmo to create an effective ministry.

What’s the one thing you wish people knew about your job?

That most of the techs that help churches see their job or business as a ministry to the church. We know there is great need of our skills and we nearly always deeply discount everything we do for churches as compared to secular work.

What is the one tool for your job that you can’t live without, and why?

Recently I have switched to Notion.so for project management. I have found it to be a wonderful tool for helping me organize and keep projects together.

What is the biggest mistake that you see churches making when it comes to communications and marketing?

I think there are two major issues that face churches in this situation. First, they try to use every platform for every person and ministry instead of focusing on the ones that work for certain groups that don’t for others.

The second is even if they do use focused platform choices, the church lacks consistent branding. Every church should have a brand asset book that exists in a hard copy physical format, a PDF, and a shared directory location where those who would be using those assets can easily find them.

Who is someone that you look up to in the church communications world?

I am friends with Justin Nava and Seth Muse. I have been on Justin’s podcast twice. I really like how both work hard to draw the best from the churches they work with and show how to use new platforms.

A big shoutout to Doug Triplett for his impactful work as the main writer for GodsOwnMan.com, for helping churches learn more about the synergy of technology and worship. Doug’s focus is on using technology to help churches in spreading the word through the internet. Your passion is truly inspiring, Doug! Your desire to teach technology is a true gift for the people around you!
