Terra Campbell
Where do you serve, what is your title and how long have you served there?
I serve at West University United Methodist Church. I’ve worked here for a year and a half. I’m currently the Director of Children’s Ministries and Communications, but will be transitioning to Communications only at the end of the month! I started doing communications work about a year ago in order to fill a void in the church, and it quickly developed into more as we found I have a gifting for it.
How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t go to church?
I help communicate the mission, heart, and work of our church to the congregation and wider community. I make sure people are in the loop with the happenings of the church, our preschool, and our school of fine arts.
What were some of the things that you experienced that shaped the way you approach your work?
I’m not sure I’ve been in this position long enough to answer this question well — I’m still learning how to approach my work.
What’s the one thing you wish people knew about your job?
That communications is SO much more than making Worship guides and newsletters. There’s graphic design involved, marketing, social media management, and a whole list of other things that we can do to further the mission of the church and help it operate efficiently .
What is the one tool for your job that you can’t live without and why?
Canva. It is the most powerful and versatile graphic creation tool I’ve found and the opportunities for what you can create with it are limitless! Plus it’s free for churches, so that’s a plus.
What is the biggest mistake that you see churches making when it comes to communications and marketing?
I don’t feel I can really speak to this, as I’m still learning the role and have a ways to go. However, the biggest mistake I’ve run into is not having people proofread my work. ALWAYS. HAVE. A. PROOFER. (Or 5). I spend so much time with my work that I miss the typos or little mistakes. Having a few other pairs of eyes look it over before it’s published or sent out is essential.
Who is someone that you look to up in the church communications world?
I’m still getting to know people here, but I’d say that I really admire everyone who is willing to share their experience and knowledge with people like me who are new to the job. I love seeing how different people (of all ages, stages, and experience levels) from different church backgrounds come together to support and help each other. We may have different types of churches, but we are all united through Christ and in mission and it really shows in this Facebook group.
