What’s your name?

Billy Hardy

Where do you serve, what is your title, and how long have you served there?

Pastor of Leaf River Baptist Church. Leaf River, IL…I’ve been here since July 2019

How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t go to church?

Well, I serve as many people as I can every week. I get the privilege of getting paid to study Scripture and teach others in a way that makes sense to them. I look for ways to serve and engage with the community both online and in person. I will engage online with the community by letting people know that the church is here for them. I also spend time each week counseling people both in the community and in the church.

What were some of the things that you experienced that shaped the way you approach your work?

I worked for a very long time outside of the church. This allows me to have the same (or similar) perspective to those that are not involved in church culture. Therefore, I am able to relate to people in multiple walks of life.

What’s the one thing you wish people knew about your job?

The weight is real. I cannot describe the level of exhaustion I experience now versus when I worked 70 hours a week outside of the church. The spiritual battle is real, so please pray for your pastors…encourage them when you can.

What is the one tool for your job that you can’t live without, and why?

Logos Bible software

What is the biggest mistake that you see churches making when it comes to communications and marketing?

Not doing anything…I see so many church that feel an online presence is just for the “big” church. We are a church of 75 people and we are marketing to the community, because those that don’t go to church need to understand that church is better than the concert, or movies, or whatever entertainment they are seeking. We do not need to market the Gospel, you do need to “market” your church.

Who is someone that you look up to in the church communications world?

I’m am very much a novice in the church comms world. Therefore, I’m going to give the “suck up” answer and say Kenny and Katie. 😉 I do listen to what they both say as they “live” in this world, where I only “visit” a few times a week/month.

Hats off to Billy Hardy for being a great Pastor at Leaf River Baptist Church, showing how helping and connecting with people really matters. Billy’s way of linking the church and the community, thanks to his time beyond the church, reminds us how important it is to understand each other when we talk. We hope Billy keeps in mind that his work truly makes a big difference, bringing happiness and encouragement to people’s lives.
