What’s your name?
Emily Miller
Where do you serve, what is your title, and how long have you served there?
National Farm Worker Ministry, Director of Communications, 1 1/2 years
How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t go to church?
We bring the stories of farmworkers into the pews and equip faith communities to join our faith with theirs as we collectively bring justice into the fields.
What were some of the things that you experienced that shaped the way you approach your work?
Being fortunate to have for-profit experience that married my skills with my love of justice for all God’s people. Having jobs that let me see both the best and the worst of what the church can be. Having jobs that sent me travelling across 5 continents.
What’s the one thing you wish people knew about your job?
That we can, and should, only communicate what is authentically present, and that we can be a leading force in developing what authentically should be.
What is the one tool for your job that you can’t live without, and why?
My smartphone.
What is the biggest mistake that you see churches making when it comes to communications and marketing?
Not asking the “why.”
Who is someone that you look up to in the church communications world?
Too many to name, but one would be Sophia Agtarap.
We admire your passion and commitment to being a vehicle of justice and faith to your community, Emily. You are truly an inspiration to everyone. We hope that church communicators will find their purpose and stand by it as they serve in their ministry.
