What’s your name?
Wendy McSwain
Where do you serve, what is your title, and how long have you served there?
Real Life Church, Communications Director, Feb 2020!
How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t go to church?
My job is to get the word out to the people. Whether that be events, sermons, or simply encouragement, I’m working to help people see how the love of Jesus can change their lives and their community.
What were some of the things that you experienced that shaped the way you approach your work?
Working in the creative industry and simply being part of a local church, helped me to see how I could use my gifts to further the kingdom. Also creating has a larger purpose and in a lot of ways less ego and pressure than it did for me in the past.
What’s the one thing you wish people knew about your job?
I wish people knew that my job has become my ministry. I take it very seriously but also enjoy it so much. Creating messages that solve a problem keeps me thinking and challenged.
What is the one tool for your job that you can’t live without, and why?
My Macbook Pro followed closely by my 1canoe2 paper planner. My notes guide my work created every day on my little best friend, my computer.
What is the biggest mistake that you see churches making when it comes to communications and marketing?
I don’t know. I’m just learning the church side of marketing and communications myself and have been so grateful for the example of other churches big and small and groups like Church Communications.
Who is someone that you look up to in the church communications world?
I’m grateful for practical social media and streaming tips from Brady Shearer and Jake Gosselin at the moment.
Wendy, your commitment shows in your statements and choice of words. We are so proud of people like you who are new to church communications but are very keen to grow much more. Keep up the great work!
