Formatting a Sermon Presentation

Church communicators oftentimes must focus on the small details. One example is sermon presentation. Most pastors prefer to have sermon points displayed on-screen as they preach If you are a church communicator, preparing those slides is very likely a part of your job, as well as choosing an appropriate typeface and font size. Maybe you’ve never even considered those details. Maybe you have strong opinions (or at least you hate Comic Sans). Either way, our church communicators have a few suggestions we’d like to showcase.

Typefaces

CMG Sans

“CMG Sans white on black and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” – Matthew Ohnmeiss

Tahoma

“I like to use Tahoma. It is easy to read, and it is one of the best fonts for anyone who may have dyslexia.” – Bobby Wilson

Gnuolane

“I still really like Gnuolane, bold, but skinny so that I can get more words on a line.” – Joel K Osborn

Font Sizes

“I try to not go below 44, but like 50 – 80.” – Billy Holden

“I heard someone recommend once: ‘Take the median age of the people in the room and double it. That’s your minimum font size.’ It actually might not be bad advice.” – Brian Ayers

“I try not to do less than 40 and a ‘sans’ font” – Jarrod Spencer

Conclusion

In summary, choose a typeface that is simple and easy to read. You don’t want anything too distracting. Our church communicators specifically recommend CMG Sans, Tahoma, and Gnuolane. As far as font size, stay above 40 pt. Also, make sure that you maintain good resolution on your projector or LED screens as you adjust the font size. As always, test it out before service time to make sure everything looks alright. Typeface and font size are not exciting details to consider, but they are certainly important!
