Name: Jennifer Wilson
Where do you serve, what is your title and how long have you served there? South Ridge Church, Communication Director, I have been on staff since July 2018.
How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t go to church? Most of the communication that goes out or comes into the church goes through me and I manage all of the main social media channels.
What were some of the things that you experienced that shaped the way you approach your work? I had a job as a marketing director at a mall when I was younger and I never liked to admit when I didn’t know something or was in over my head, so I suffered and opportunities were missed. Now I readily admit when I don’t know something and look for resources or people who can help me get what needs done accomplished.
What’s the one thing you wish people knew about your job? That it is a lot more than it seems on the surface and there is not a lot of time that I can just forget about it completely since social media is a 24/7 thing.
What is the one tool for your job that you can’t live without and why? Canva! It has made making quality-looking media so easy. And Control Z!
What is the biggest mistake that you see churches making when it comes to communications and marketing? They make their announcements too wordy or too busy.
Who is someone that you look to up in the church communications world?
Katie Allred, of course! Seriously, I have been so thankful for the communications group and I really appreciate her and Darrel for pioneering it. I have learned so much from the group and never feel like I am being “talked at” during the podcasts and things I watch on there like I do some other resources I have used. I feel like we are all on the same team.
